the concept and brand identity of an app for virtual sports events
For the last months, outdoors sports enthusiasts have had to find new ways of practising their favourite activities at home due to the several lockdowns we all had to struggle with.
Bilbao Ekintza, as the council office for economic development of the city of Bilbao, is always seeking new ways of combining top-notch technologies and local strategies.
After casting a glance over the most popular indoors sports platforms in market, such as Bkool or Zwift, Bilbao Ekintza is determined to create a brand new app/web service in order to provide with virtual sports options and events in Bilbao and the whole province of Biscay.
How does it work?
Just link your device (smart bike, treadmill, smartwatch) to the app and choose the activity you want to simulate. Then, you can pick from different routes and itineraries (e. g. hiking a local mountain or going on a race across the province). The activities will be already loaded onto the platform, which will have been recorded to be shown on your screen.
We chose to focus on three main activities:
Cycling
Running
Rowing
They are easy to simulate with wearables and other devices (smart bikes, treadmills), and they’re also a sample of the range of sports which can be practised in Bilbao/Biscay.
I came up with the possible name, Bilboost, after combining Bilbao + Boost. In addition, I took the double “O” from “Boost” to make the logo, which also resembles the pulley of a smart bike.
My main tasks were to ideate, sketch and design a logo and user interface concept, to discuss and bring up ideas with my team for the latter development, and to find stakeholders who might be interested in the project, such as local gyms or sports events organisers.
This project is still at an Alpha stage, but my team and I were able to get started with the concept process and deliver some drafts.
